I’ve been writing a book for the past 18 years… and I’m just beginning to think of myself as a writer. But yesterday I published my first paper for a serious publication so that makes me an “Author.” I guess when you name it you can claim it. I’m 74 years old. Sybil died, if I remember correctly, when she was 74. But I feel like I was just born. Thank you so much for giving me the confidence to keep writing. Writing is my most favorite thing to do. Loved your interview with Virginia….I listened to it this morning because I am a Hoosier by birth, had to watch IU win! My book club, which has been meeting for over 19 years (we have three original members), picked this to read and we are discussing tonight. I could not put the book down and there are so many aspects of human life in the book. I enjoyed Virginia immensely and all different aspects of the book that came out in your interview. I also like to write letters and like to hear Virginia talk about her life as a writer. We learn from others. I have been following you for years Katie and am so glad to support KCM. Thank you!
I've published two books and am writing a third about Independent Living and other forms of elder care. My daughter asked me to write her story, which she titled "Finding Pieces and Peace: My Apache Daughter's Journey for Answers in a White World." The title is a good summary, but it also addresses our 33 foster children and the stories of other adoptions we have witnessed over the decades. In the meantime, I'd like you to read my second book, which is available on Amazon and other outlets in soft, hard, and Audible formats. I publish under a pen name, Dianne Haaland. By the way, I published my first book at age 81 and this second one at 82.
I so bonded with Sybil as she told about how her son really died - and her terrible guilt. I lost my only and very dear son and will always feel the guilt for not insisting that he not take his own life over the no-good relationship that so hurt him.
This was so much fun!!!!! Virginia was perfect to kick off your book club and her book was amazing. I had read this a month ago. Can we have more of a ‘heads up’ for the next title? Could I suggest James?
My mother saved every letter I ever wrote to her — 100s. I am making my way through them and it’s like reading my autobiography. Reading them has been an amazing experience.
It was Sybil whose son died and she had tremendous, lifelong guilt over it. This why she and Daan separated/divorced, his move back to Belgium with their daughter, Fiona which lead to her strained relationship with her.

I did not know and had to reread parts of the book to feel what she expressed to her lost son.
She didn’t lose her son, her best friend lost her son
