Hi friends. I know all of us have been watching the events unfold in Los Angeles over the weekend. The Trump administration has continued its crackdown on immigration. A high-profile raid at a Fashion District warehouse in LA on Friday triggered public outrage and confrontations with ICE agents -- leading to a weekend of protests.
In response to the protests, 300 National Guard troops are on the ground in Los Angeles, and 500 Marines are ready to deploy on President Trump's orders — bypassing Governor Newsom. Police have used non-lethal ammo and tear gas on crowds, and protesters have set vehicles on fire. Around 60 people were arrested in San Francisco yesterday, and L.A. is now an "unlawful assembly" area.
I wanted to look at the bigger picture of how unprecedented this action of deploying the National Guard is, and the larger implications it could have. Joining me today is Hina Shamsi, Director of the ACLU National Security Project, which is dedicated to ensuring that U.S. national security policies and practices comply with the Constitution, civil liberties, and human rights.
