Bonjour from France! I wanted to check in with you all following the news that the Senate narrowly passed President Trump’s spending and tax bill on Tuesday. The bill is now with the House of Representatives, and Speaker Mike Johnson has an uphill battle working to get it passed before Trump’s self-imposed July 4 deadline. According to reporting from Axios, there are “well over 20” GOP lawmakers who have said they have problems with the current bill.
As a reminder, this bill includes extended and expanded tax cuts that largely benefit the wealthiest Americans and significant cuts to Medicaid, food stamps and other programs. More than 71 million people rely on Medicaid, and 40 million use the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, otherwise known as SNAP. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that 11.8 million more Americans would become uninsured by 2034 if the bill becomes law and 3 million more would not qualify for food stamps.
It will add at least $3.3 trillion to the national debt over the next decade -- that’s enough money to buy every piece of real estate in Manhattan twice -- according to The New York Times
